About Handakas
HANDAKAS is the South Australian branch of the New Varangian Guard.

The New Varangian Guard are a dedicated group re-enacting the fascinating middle period of the Byzantine Empire and surrounding cultures through combat, arts and sciences.

We aim to make our recreation as realistic as possible without compromising safety, the law, or personal enjoyment. We also endeavor to create and maintain channels of communication amongst members, other recreation groups, educators, government and the business community. In this way we provide opportunities and venues for members to practice, display and teach the skills, arts and crafts that they pursue.

Viking Shield Fridge Magnets: At only $2 these magnets are a fantastic buy and all proceeds go towards the club pavillion fund! The magnets are hand painted by Kelly (and a few helpers) and come with a small information pack about Viking shield construction and design.

Viking Game Sheets: Patti has constructed some fantastic game sheets with the board, pieces and instructions. These are available for only 50c each, 3 for $1 or all 7 sheets for $2. Games available are: Hnefatafl (2 versions), Merels (12 or 9 - also called Morris), Fox and Geese, Zatrikion (Byzantine Chess) and Halatafl.

Wooden game boards: Woodburnt by Patti, boards for sale so far are Merels (9 or 12) and Halatafl. Each comes in a calico bag with leather thong tie, embroidered with the name of the game. The bag holds printed game rules and a small draw string calico bag of glass game pieces also embroidered with the name of the game. $20 each.

Pop-Up Cards: Hand crafted by Patti, these $5 cards are approximately 15cm x 15cm. The front depicts a battle axe. When opened a single masted Viking boat with the Byzantine eagle on the sail and individually painted round shields along the side pops up from the page.
